Brief History

After trying to commit to memory where I have put for safe keeping all of my recipes on cards, newspaper clippings, internet printouts, etc. (and failing), I finally decided to create a blog to store them all. Well, not all actually. I have also decided to make a concentrated effort to eat a plant-centered diet and teach my family to do the same. For the better part of a year I have done a lot of reading on diet and health and will post a list of books I found to be helpful, but have come to this conclusion: I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and I believe in the Word of Wisdom, and that by eating a plant-centered diet I will be following its teachings more closely and be worthy of its promised blessings.

So, this blog will only post recipes that meet the following criteria: (1) recipes will not have any ingredients that come from animal products, (2) they must be taste-tested by me or trusted friends for yumminess, and (3) the ingredients must be easy to find in Caldwell.

Oh yes, so where in the world is Caldwell for those readers who may not be familiar with my neck of the woods? Caldwell is a small/mediumish sized town nestled a marathon distance from Boise in southwestern Idaho. We have some decent grocery stores, farmers markets during the growing season, and a family run market which sells some varieties of beans and grains that I don't see at the larger stores, but we don't have specialty stores that carry some of the more obscure ingredients frequently found in  gourmet recipes...and many vegetarian recipes. Such items can probably be found in Boise but as I have twin boys toddling around (well running to be honest) I can't be zipping off here and there to search out items that are foreign to Caldwell. Thus the title of the blog: A Vegan in Caldwell. Here is my collection of recipes that are vegan, healthy, tasty, and realistic to prepare when you live where I do.
